Around the time I was working on Voices in the Distance I wrote several Progressive Metal/Jazzcore miniatures. A few years ago I thought of recording them as an EP before writing my next album. But what started as a 5 minute EP quickly became a full album.

Revisiting these miniatures inspired me to continue exploring the instrumentation and styles I had used. Three of them were written for drums, bass, and two differently-tuned guitars, one in drop-D, one in drop-C. In all of them I had used similar low to mid-gain guitar tones.

I wanted to see how far I could take these instruments and these sounds, exploring several methods of composition: minimalism, stream of consciousness, intricate use of hyper-measures to guide structure; contrasts in: volume, playing style, song length; and different elements of heavy music: progressive metal, mathcore, jazzcore, punk, black metal, thrash metal, post metal.
